Ashford-in-the-water

from Bakewell, we drove 2 miles north to Ashford in the water.  It is a picturesque village on the river Wye with the medieval Sheepwash Bridge as its focal point.

A small walled enclosure near the old Sheepwash Bridge is still occasionally used for its original purpose. Ashford was once the centre for the production of Black Marble, a highly polished limestone produced in local quarries and mines, examples of which can be seen in the small church of Holy Trinity. Famous for its' Well Dressings held in early June, Ashford also has some delightful old limestone cottages and well kept gardens.
